SLYCS Frequently Asked Questions
What is chamber music? Often described as "music of friends," chamber music is a small number of musicians, typically one performer to a part, which is fitting for a performance in an intimate setting, historically performed in homes, salons, or a palace chamber.
Why should I play chamber music? Chamber music requires a different set of musical and social skills than used in solo or orchestral playing. It requires a balance between assertiveness and flexibility. It also requires creativity of interpretation. While each musician has an independent part, the group comes to an agreed interpretation of how the music should sound. Many people enjoy the interaction of musical parts that can be found in the intimate setting of chamber music.
Why should I join SLYCS? The coaches at SLYCS will guide your ensemble to understand the intricacies of this specialized style of musical communication. For a commitment of 2 hours each month, your ensemble will have an opportunity to develop friendships and musical skills throughout the academic year, with opportunities to give several performances.
How big is a chamber ensemble? Chamber ensembles start with 2 musicians. The most popular instrumentation for chamber music is the string quartet: 2 violins, 1 viola, and 1 cello. Our groups at SLYCS vary in size, but we typically have quartets, quintets, sextets, septets, and even octets!
Does the SLYCS have positions available for wind players? While we do not currently have any wind ensmebles, we would love to create groups that are either made up of wind players (woodwind or brass quintets, and the like) or groups that would feature a wind player (like the Mozart Flute Quartets). Please contact us to set up an audition, even if you are a wind player!
How do I become a part of SLYCS? All interested students will audition for the junior (ages 8-12) or senior (ages 13-18) groups directors. An audition consists of repertoire that represents the student's best playing ability. Students should prepare a solo, a scale of your choice, and prepare to sight read music. Auditions will typically last 10-15 minutes.
How often do SLYCS groups rehearse? All groups receive a coaching twice a month for one hour. Senior groups are expected to meet each week to prepare for the every-other-week coaching.
When do SLYCS groups meet? We meet on Fridays after school hours twice a month. You will be assigned a specific coaching time for the entire year.
Where does SLYCS meet? We meet at the "Marmalade Church, " 700 N 200 W, Salt Lake City.
How much does it cost? For Juniors, tuition is $270 for the entire year or $140 paid in August and January. For Seniors, tuition is $300 for the entire year or $160 paid in August and January.
What if I can't commit to the entire school year? Some groups may be able to adapt different schedules. Please notify the directors at your audition.
What if I can't make it to every coaching? Our chamber groups are small and we can't rehearse without you! Students are allowed one excused coaching each semester for extenuating circumstances such as illness. Please notify us of any conflicting dates ahead of time. Attendance is mandatory for performance and dress rehearsal dates.
Will you offer auditions mid-year for new participants? If we have a spot available to add you to one of our ensembles, we will consider adding new students to the junior groups.
